| Customer Reviews: Perfect stereo for Jeeps June 4, 2010 P. Smith (Windham, ME United States) Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWWB5ERQLHERS I own a Jeep, and it spends the whole summer with no top & doors. One day last summer I had to go somewhere so I pulled the tarp off the Jeep - it had rained the night before - and despite my best efforts water poured off it and directly into my stereo. Needless to say, it was ruined. A while back I decided it was time for new tunes, and after some searching I found out about the MS-IP500. As soon as I had the funds I ordered it, and just this past weekend I installed it. The installation was relatively straightforward, I had to do some minor trimming to the stereo opening in the HVAC console bezel because the head is BIG on this thing, but other than that it was just like installing any other stereo. The installation instructions are excellent, as are the labels on the wires themselves. I bought an adapter harness from Crutchfield, and it used the same colors as the Fusion harness so there's absolutely no reason to screw anything up.
Due to the simplified controls, you're given bass & treble controls, a balance slider, zone controls (more on this in a minute), and high-pass & low pass filters for each zone. It's meant for use in boats, where you may want louder music on the bridge or deck, and less volume belowdecks - hence, zones with separate controls. I wired zone 1 to my front speakers and zone 2 to the ones in the sound bar, and on the volume control screen you can adjust each separately as a kind of pseudo-fader.
It sounds GREAT. Not being a true audiophile I had to educate myself on high-pass & low-pass filters, and after I'd done that I went out and tinkered around with things for about 1/2 hour. Now I think it sounds about as close to perfect as I'll get it without an EQ. The controls are easy to use and very intuitive (to me, at least), with very few problem areas. I had a single instance of the stereo locking up and not shutting off with the vehicle, most likely due to me pressing a button or buttons too quickly or too many times. Pop the hood, use 1/2" wrench to loosen negative battery cable, pop cable off, radio stops. Perform steps in reverse order and you're all set. It hasn't happened again. The unit's gotten wet this week and hasn't given me any trouble.
OK, now for the issues. They're all minor, but could probably be fixed. First, when you push the rotary wheel to enter the volume control screen, if you don't make a change almost immediately - as in 1 second - it reverts back to the song info screen. If you're driving you may not be able to make the changes right away, so a longer delay of 5-10 seconds would be nice. Next, you can link zones 1 & 2 together so their volumes increase and decrease together. BUT, if you do this both zones are set to the same volume - in other words your "fader" settings go out the window. I'd like to be able to set my "fader" - say, a 60:40 front:rear bias - and then link the zones so the bias stays the same. As it is now the volume control sequence when you press the wheel is thus: Zone 1 - all zones - zone 2 - zone 3 - zone 4 (I have 3 & 4 disabled.) So while driving along I have to hit the wheel twice then turn it immediately or else it reverts. Still, it's not that much trouble, and I'm getting better at it - if I press my hand against the front of the unit it steadies me enough so the bouncing Jeep doesn't cause me to make the wrong inputs.
In closing, if you're in need of a stereo for an open-air vehicle that will get wet, this is a good one. The price was steep enough to make me hold off, til one day I found the one sold at a very nice price by this vendor almost by accident. I don't miss carrying CDs - this is the 21st century, after all - and the iPod is the way to go. I'd definitely buy another one or recommend it to someone.
