I was little leary of puchasing another MInn Kota, although I had always been satisfied with them until the last one I purchased. It was a 12 volt 55lb. and I had trouble with the tensioning screw. It would never get tight enough,so if I ran it on high the torque made it impossible to steer. It also had a bushing go out prematurely. As far as Amazon goes, I thought $498 was a good price, and it was the cheapest I found at the time, but Bass Pro Shops ran a sale right after I bought it on the equivalent Motor Guide product for $429 so I wish I had waited.

I purchased this motor in February and mounted on my 17' Xpress aluminum bass boat. The motor works fine and has plenty of power. However, in April, it quit steering. Luckily, there is a local Minn Kota authorized service center. A screw that holds the shaft to the pinion had come out inside the housing. It did enough damage to the shaft that it locked up and required shaft replacement. The service center did the repair promptly under warranty, but said this was a common problem with the edge motors. The pinion attaches to the shaft with only two screws and they commonly back out. I paid the difference to have my shaft upgraded to the Maxxum shaft and pinion, which has a four screw mount. The cost difference was minimal and it results in a more dependable connection. Why doesn't Minn Kota use a quality connection in the first place?
