My vary first baitcast reel November 24, 2007
I have fished for over 30 years (since i was knee high) with spinning and spincast equipment and have accumulated 18 reels (4 are carbon copies I use for cat fishing and 9 are retired {wore out} so 5 really...) As of now I got one for the ocean, a medium and light real for fresh water and a heavy and medium fly rod ). I've pretty much mastered all there is when it comes to open and close face reels, and have been fly fishing for a few years so I'm still learning there. Truth be told probly %70 of that time was pier fishing, I never really had the money to go out on a boat every time. Well that has changed and i can focus more on short accurate cast from a boat instead of long cast to where I want to be. Also i can focus more on sliding weight plastic rigs. I got to reading on the precision of bait casting and they're desirability for jig style fishing, and decided I was going to do it right if I did. I got this reel (RH narrow spool) as I learned long ago that Phlueger makes some pretty good reels. I matched this with a 7 foot med-lite power fast action rod from st. Croix rod (a high quality USA made product BTW). I think a shorter rod would make it easier but i can get good distance off a light lurer so I'm sticking with it.

I couldn't be more satisfied, I'm still getting backlash when I switch a lure or line weight but I'm learning how to adjust the thing depending on what im doing. Once I cast the same thing about 10 times I got it down pat but any change in my cast or gear and things get tricky for a while. I found it had an odd faint retrieve (like the gears aren't meshing right or something) Oh no... But to my relief it's just the nylon gears that move the line guid back and forth. The main crank gears are cut so clean (out of yellow brass I might add) they look polished. It shows as there is no noticeable feeling when you reel it in under tension A+!!! It has two vary large drag disks (similar to front drag of medium spinners) witch makes for a vary controllable and consistent drag. It's seems like it will last a good long time and help me make some vary precise casts and improve my jigging with that 6.3:1 ratio.

I'm still a novice when it comes to these baitcasters but this reel is making it pretty easy for me. To adjust the brake all you have to do is unlock the cover and push out or in the little feet things that ride agents the brake drum (I don't know what else to call it >:D). The reel is built pretty solid, every thing fits tight and operates vary smooth (except those worm gears...). It's pretty easy to take apart and clean, just got to make sure a spring doesn't' go flying.

Again I'm new at this so I don't know how a really good baitcast reel is supposed to act but I think this one will be a good buy for anyone who wants to pick something off one of the higher shelves.

I admit, I did not purchase this reel from Amazon but I do a LOT of shopping on Amazon so I wanted to post a review for this product. By the way, the price amazon has this reel for is the same I purcahsed it for so it was not price reason I did not purchase here, it was simply I wanted to test it hands on in a bass pro shop.

I could not be more happy with my decision on this reel. Aside from all the great features in this real, there is one thing that stands out that ONLY TWO reel manufactured offer. I wanted a left hand crank being I learned to fish incorrectly for years on spinner rods, holding my eye-loops down and I wanted a wide spool. There are only manufactured and only a total of two reels who offer both of features. Pflueger is one of them. To read a more complete review, check out this link.
