Pure Junk (No Stars) American Hawks $59.99 Metal Detector--Totally Useless August 3, 2008

Pure Junk! The Main frame that screws onto the other frame will not stay together. This item is totally useless, and with having to go through all the hassle with returning it and getting only a fraction of my money back, I thought I would save others the MISERY-DO NOT ORDER from American Hawks product line. I say it again, DO NOT ORDER from American Hawks product line. The item is extremely cheap and the postage was totally outrageous. I spent close to $80.00 for this piece of junk--save your money for a decent metal detector. This metal detector reminds of the same kind of junk you would buy at one of those charlatan-snake oil salesman tent sales. Like the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. And again, NO STARS for American Hawks and their product line!

I bought a basic one for my son and the explorer model for myself. We both enjoy our new toys. For explorer metal detector, it is light and comes with many feature coming with advanced model.

This unit is the very best metal detector I have seen for under $80. It has no target identification meter, but it does have a very decent discrimination control and reasonably good depth for it's price. In an air test I was able to detect a US penny at 7 inches away from the search coil, and that again is quite remarkable for the amount of money I invested buying it.

I own about 20 other metal detectors, some costing as much as $1000. I was a detector repairman during the 80's, and I have used nearly every metal detector on the retail market in the last 30 years. I would recommend this detector as the very best starter detector to be found, and as for myself, I plan to use it too, especially in gravel or dirt parking lots where it seems to shine. The search rod is barely long enough for me at 6'1", but it is adequate. The housing is well made and sturdy, although the rear armrest is a little inadequate in that it does not always stop it from pulling away from my forearm as I swing it. But that could be easily remedied with a lightweight strap of some kind. I think I got a real good deal with this detector. It is a very nice little detector.
